Welcome to
The Brevard Jewish Community
Left to right, Norman Bossert, Father Carl and Marvin Barg discussing a portion from our new Torah. |

Who We Are: |
In the spring of 2001, Norman and Shelley Bossert placed a small ad in the Transylvania Times. It asked two simple questions, "Are You Jewish? Do you want to meet for Torah study on Friday nights?" In the next 24 hours the Bossert phone rang 57 times and the Brevard Jewish Community was born. Last year, our community raised enough money to purchase a Torah of our own. A suitable scroll was found in Atlanta and brought back to Brevard to await the construction of an ark to house it. That construction was completed in time for Passover. Since then we have received donations of rimonim, Torah crowns and are in the process of raising money for a breast plate in honor Paul Goldschmidt, an enthusiastic and tireless member of the Torah Committee. Four women of the congregation have formed a committee and will soon begin making two mantles, one for the High Holy Day Season and a second for the rest of the year. If you enjoy needle work and wish to help with this project, please email us by clicking here. We are a small, hamish community of Jews of different backgrounds meeting Friday nights for Torah study, worship and fellowship in the beautiful mountains of Western North Carolina. We use a Reform prayer book but tailor services to the needs and preferences of our members offering more Conservative worship when asked. Norman Bossert and Marvin Barg, pictured above right, lead most of our services but are delighted to share that honor with members who feel comfortable in that role. |

Where We Meet: |
We are guests of the Sacred Heart Church in Brevard, North Carolina. We meet in the social hall, on the right of the sanctuary. If you are coming from Pisgah National Park, Hendersonville or Asheville, the church is on the right just past the market, "Poppies" before you get into town on route 64 west. If you are coming into town from Greenville, Rosman, Lake Toxaway or Cashiers, go through town on route 64 east. The church will be on your left past the Enmark station as you head out of town. There is a white sign with blue lettering that reads, "Sacred Heart Catholic Church", at the end of the drive that leads into the church parking area.
