Welcome to The Brevard Jewish Community

Left to right, Norman Bossert, Father Carl and Marvin Barg discussing a portion from our Torah.

Who We Are:

In the spring of 2001, Norman and Shelley Bossert placed a small ad in the Transylvania Times.  It asked two simple questions, "Are You Jewish?  Do you want to meet for Torah study on Friday nights?"  In the next 24 hours the Bossert phone rang 57 times and the Brevard Jewish Community was born.

By early in  the spring of 2006, our community had raised enough money to purchase a Torah of our own.  A suitable scroll was found in Atlanta and brought back to Brevard to await the construction of an ark to house it.  That construction was completed in time for Passover with a formal dedication in the Fall of the year, just in time for the High Holy Days.  Since then we have received donations of rimonim, Torah crowns and a breast plate in honor Paul Goldschmidt, an enthusiastic and tireless member of the Torah Committee.

We are a small, hamish community of Jews of different backgrounds meeting Friday nights for Torah study, worship and fellowship in the beautiful mountains of Western North Carolina.  We use a Reform prayer book but tailor services to the needs and preferences of our members offering more Conservative worship when asked.  Norman Bossert and Marvin Barg, pictured above, lead most of our services but are delighted to share that honor with members who feel comfortable in that role.

Several women of the congregation have formed a committee and will soon begin making two mantles, one for the High Holy Day Season and a second for the rest of the year.  If you enjoy needle work and wish to help with this project, please email us by clicking here.

Where We Meet:

We are guests of the Sacred Heart Church in Brevard, North Carolina.  We meet in the Social Hall, on the right of the Sanctuary.  If you are coming from Pisgah National Forest, Hendersonville or Asheville, the church is on the right past Straus Park before you get into town on route 64 west.

If you are coming into town from Greenville, Rosman, Lake Toxaway or Cashiers, go through town on route 64 east.  The church will be on your left past the Enmark station as you head out of town.  There is a white sign with blue lettering that reads, "Sacred Heart Catholic Church", at the end of the drive that leads into the church parking area.

From the Board

The board met on 1 October and created the calendar for 2012. The only scheduled events left for 2011 are Friday night services each week at Sacred Heart at 7:00 P.M. and our Chanukah Latke party on 23 December.  Plans and times will be updated as we get close to and begin preparations for these events. Your willingness to help with the organization and preparation will be greatly appreciated.

At the board meeting there was also a discussion about the format of services and the desire for occasional special programs. Anyone who wants to participate, direct, add, or amend our service is welcome to do so.  The board asks that you discuss any of these desires with Marvin Barg, ritual director.  The board has asked David Goodman and Howard Rock to help create programs associated with services one Friday in the months of May, June, July and August of 2012. These programs could be speakers, music, panel discussions, or whatever the membership wants.  Anyone who has an idea for a program or wants to present a program should contact David at 828-885-5323 or Howard at rockh@fiu.edu.

If there is anyone willing and able to help us keep and update a BJC directory it would be greatly appreciated. We need names, e-mail addresses, and phone and street addresses for those without e-mail.

Thanks and we look forward to seeing you at BJC services and events,

Ross Lynch, President

Passover Seder     -     Welcome Back Brunch     -     Shabbat Dinners

Break-the-Fast     -     Hanukkah Party

Retha has kept a file on these events with information concerning number of people expected to attend, food needs, and contact people. We also have many of the needed supplies on hand.  There is lots of help and guidance to be had, so please step forward and help us keep the BJC programs going!  Please contact me to volunteer at:  rlynchiz@gmail.com or 828-877-3137.

Contributions

Please remember that Brevard Jewish Community has no dues structure.  The demands of our annual budget are small but in order to meet our obligations, the congregation relies on your generous donations to remain functional.  Please consider memorials, congratulation wishes and The High Holy Days as an excellent time for Tzedakah.  Please send your contributions to our treasurer at:
